Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) – In 1922 six nurses founded Sigma at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. The founders chose the name from the Greek words Storgé, Tharsos, and Timé meaning "love," "courage," and "honor." Sigma became incorporated in 1985 as Sigma Theta Tau International Inc., a nonprofit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax status in the United States. This weekend I was deeply honored to receive the Dr. Doris Froebe Leadership Education Grant from the Sigma Foundation for Nursing and present my work at the 37th International Nurse Research Congress in Toronto 🇨🇦 With over 1,000 nurses representing 47 countries, the international gathering allowed me to make incredible connections across the global ecosystem of nursing research and practice. The future of our profession will not be written in isolation. It will be shaped through collective effort in spaces that foster international collaboration and transform knowledge into action. Some highlights included: 💡 Speaking with Canada’s Chief Nursing Officer, Dr. Leigh Chapman, about the importance of nurses in policy spaces. 💡Gaining insight from Dr. Aaron King's community-based program that strengthens access to mental health resources for Black men by providing group therapy in California barber shops. 💡Learning about programs prioritizing cultural continuity of care for Australia’s First Nations to improve maternal and infant health outcomes from Dr. Nina Sivertsen Thank you to the Sigma Foundation for Nursing for recognizing the importance of supporting equitable participation in spaces of collective learning. Grants like these are vital for expanding the resources and opportunities to share research and advance the nursing profession.
