About us

The Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA) is a service organization and statewide voice for Minnesota's electric utility cooperatives. MREA's 15 employees provide their expertise in service and leadership including: public awareness communications, safety training, legislative research and lobbying, and industry education programs. A member board representing electric co-ops across the state governs MREA. MREA's members, forty-four electric distribution cooperatives and six generation and transmission (G&T) co-ops in Minnesota, serve 780,000 customer meters or about 1.8 million Minnesotans, covering 85 percent of the geographic area of the state. These cooperatives are locally-owned and operated by boards of directors, who are elected by the consumer-members they serve and operate according to the seven cooperative principles. The cooperatives seek to provide electric energy to rural consumers at the lowest possible cost consistent with sound management. They also promote and fund economic development initiatives to create jobs and maintain a high standard of living for rural and suburban Minnesota residents.

  • Recently, MREA had the privilege of presenting checks to Minnesota's three specialty burn centers: Regions Hospital, Hennepin Healthcare and Essentia Health. Thanks to the generosity of electric cooperative employees, lineworkers, industry partners, sponsors and volunteers, the 21st Annual MREA Burn Center Golf Benefit raised $69,507 to support burn victims and their families and help fund the latest treatment technologies. Since 2006, the tournament has raised more than $700,000 for Minnesota's burn centers. Thank you to everyone who continues to make a difference through this incredible cooperative tradition. ❤️

  • Congratulations to Senator Amy Klobuchar on receiving NRECA's Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes her support for the cooperative model and bipartisan work to improve internet access across rural America. MREA works with policymakers from both parties to advance the interests of Minnesota's electric cooperatives and the member-owners we serve. Building positive relationships across the political spectrum helps ensure co-op voices are heard on the issues that matter most to rural Minnesota.

  • Last week, MREA staff toured the Prairie Island Nuclear Plant. Seeing this critical piece of Minnesota's energy infrastructure up close was a fascinating experience and helped demystify how nuclear energy works and the important role it plays in providing reliable, carbon-free electricity for Minnesotans. The visit reinforced why MREA supports lifting Minnesota's outdated nuclear moratorium and keeping all energy options on the table.⚡

  • Thank you, Krista Ryan, for sharing your story with attendees at MREA's Member Services & Communications Conference. We're grateful you took the time to be with us and for the impact your message continues to have on others. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by cancer. We encourage everyone to talk with their health care provider and stay up to date on recommended screenings. Together we can save lives. #KFG #KeepGoing

I talk about my Stage 3 colorectal cancer journey at the very end of my Keynote and workshops. Every single time I play the same mental mind game. Is it the right move? Is it too raw and vulnerable? Is it sharing too much of ME? (A speaker is tasked to serve its audience through how THEY can take your words and put them to work) Then I receive notes like this one last night. And I am reminded that this is my WHY. Someone saved my life through sharing their story (the whole reason I got tested). So yes, I will continue to share all pieces of me. Because it matters. And reminds us that we are never alone. And that living the best life happens in the moments of human connection. Hallelujah. ❤️🙏 If you have been putting off a routine or recommended exam, this is the universe begging you to do it. Life is an amazing ride. You’re not gonna want to miss it. ❤️ #kfg #keepgoing #letmehearyourvoice
