When you invest in companies with two people and no revenue, financial chaos isn't a hypothetical. It's the job. Elizabeth Yin, co-founder of Hustle Fund, writes checks at the pre-seed stage, which means her fund's books have to stay legible while she's underwriting hundreds of businesses that barely have books yet. Her team doesn't use a dashboard someone else designed. They pull Mercury's API and build the views they actually need, so the picture is always clear no matter how fast things move.

Every founder has a finance horror story. You know, the kind they only tell over dinner, maybe after a couple of drinks. Want to share yours and hear from others? On October 23, I’m joining Mercury in New York for Off the Books: Dinner Edition, an intimate dinner with founders and bookkeepers to celebrate the launch of Mercury Payroll. We’ll be sharing the finance stories founders don’t usually put in the pitch deck, like: --> The payroll platform that broke on a Friday afternoon. --> The new hire who didn’t get paid on time. --> The provider switch that took months longer than it should have. --> The bank account nobody wants to admit they’re still juggling. No panels. No presentations. Just a small group of founders, good food and drinks, and an honest conversation about what it actually takes to keep a company’s finances straight. I’ll be in SF next week with Mercury, co-hosting and sitting on a panel about getting from zero to product-market fit. Finding those first customers, figuring out what they actually need, and deciding when to stick with an idea versus change course. Plenty to talk about, and I have a few lessons from my own early stage startup days to share. We’re bringing together folks from Supabase, Corgi, Vanta, and Vector Legal for the conversation, with the inimitable Richard Trinh keeping us all on topic. If you’re around for SF Tech Week, come by. Would be great to see some familiar faces and meet a few new ones. Details and RSVP: https://lnkd.in/gp5nGdhU cc: Greg Kress, Ph.D.

For early-stage companies, access to startup capital seems to be down — unless that capital is their own self-funding. Founders with significant AI adoption raised venture capital at 4x the rate of non-adopters. That’s 31% against 7%. The new economics of starting up in 2026 is out now — 1,500 US founders & builders on where the money is actually coming from → https://lnkd.in/egFmsUAG

As a remote first company, Mercury makes a concerted effort to cultivate our culture in intentional ways… Our CEO & Co-Founder Immad Akhund wrote about this a couple of months ago (I’ll link the post in the comments). One of the things he spoke to was to continue doing things that don’t scale: “There are some practices that you do at 20 people that seem like they shouldn't scale at 1,300 people. But we try to go out of our way to preserve these practices: We do a company social all hands with everyone once a year. This year it’s at New Orleans” I've been remarkably fortunate to attend four of Mercury's company all hands. We gather as a company, reflect on what has been, what's to come, and enjoy the chance to connect beyond our computers. Our time in NOLA was every bit as meaningful and memorable as the other trips I’ve been on. From football matches to a faire, art exhibits to gumbo. These occassions are a wonderful celebration of Mercury, its culture and above all, its people. A huge thank you to everyone at Mercury who was involved in creating and curating another incredible all hands, how lucky we are.

Most founders can name a book that changed how they build. For SF Tech Week, we're collecting those sorts of titles into a bookstore. For three days, Jackson Square will be home to the Mercury Books bookstore, where shelves of books curated by our founder community promise to multiply your light bulb moments. Each day brings a live speaker session exploring the art of storytelling. Stick around for coffee alongside fellow founders, peruse the shelves, and leave with a book of your choosing. Oct 6–8 in San Francisco. Details and RSVP: https://lnkd.in/g8BN4hwU
