Today marks the rising of the Corn Moon! For many Algonquian-speaking nations of the East Coast, this full moon signaled more than a harvest—it marked “Nepinough”, its very own season. 🌽🌝 Unlike the 4 season calendar we know today, many Indigenous communities recognized 5 seasons, each defined by foodways and the natural cycles of planting, harvesting, and hunting. During Nepinough, corn reached peak ripeness and was honored through harvests, feasts, and ceremonies of gratitude. As the staple crop, corn was central to both daily sustenance and cultural life.
