L. Rafael Reif today announced his plan to step down as MIT president. He also named Cynthia Barnhart as provost. During Reif’s 10-year term, his bold vision led the Institute to dynamic growth and increased stature on the world stage.

Joseph “Pepe” Fields ’67 has spent his career working all over the world in international management — and, most recently, driving a recreational vehicle all over the US to build affordable housing with a Habitat for Humanity program.

Cynthia Barnhart, a longtime faculty member and former chancellor, will be MIT’s next provost. “Cindy is both a pleasure to work with and one of the most energetic, determined and effective managers I have ever known,” President L. Rafael Reif says.

As MIT’s president, L. Rafael Reif has played a significant role in shaping education and research, both on campus and around the world. But he’s also engaged as a community member — as shown in his acceptance of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014.
