VeraCrypt is a free disk encryption software brought to you by IDRIX (https://www.idrix.fr) and based on TrueCrypt 7.1a.
It adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks. It also solves many vulnerabilities and security issues found in TrueCrypt.
This enhanced security adds some delay ONLY to the opening of encrypted partitions without any performance impact to the application use phase. This is acceptable to the legitimate owner but it makes it much harder for an attacker to gain access to the encrypted data.
All released files are PGP signed with key ID=0x54DDD393, available on key servers and downloadable at https://www.idrix.fr/VeraCrypt/VeraCrypt_PGP_public_key.asc
VeraCrypt can mount TrueCrypt volumes. It also can convert them to VeraCrypt format.

Many people lose their data because the software has bugs in it. We lost very important client information due to the bugs in this software. Just Google something like "Veracrypt wrong password" and you should see the threads where Veracrypt no longer accepts your password and will not decrypt your data.

Such an awesome tool, i've been using it for some years now and i have only positive things to say about it. If you want solid good strong encrypted system with no backdoors what so ever, then i can think of no other tool than Veracrypt. Thank you for this product and thank you for keeping it updated. I fear the days when it's no longer maintained, but i hope that never will happen.

VeraCrypt destroyed my computer. I lost very important files. I've been a TrueCrypt user for many years and never had any problems! After reading the boards one thing is clear : there is no support from anyone becuase it's a free product. Second: VeraCrypt is such an underdeveloped product that you WILL run into problems eventually and lose your data!
