Azure SQL Data Warehouse, a truly elastic cloud data warehousing service, is your go-to SQL-based view across all your data, making it simple and cost-effective to transform business insights. At approximately 1/10th of the cost of traditional appliance solutions, SQL Data Warehouse delivers more freedom to scale as your business needs grow and change—you only pay for the storage you use and only the compute you need, when you need it.
Compute resources are represented by DWUs (Data Warehouse Units). In seconds you can scale up DWUs to answer questions faster and then scale down for cost savings. Unique to Azure SQL Data Warehouse, compute can also be paused when the data warehouse is not in use, further reducing your bill. Storage is provisioned separate from compute to enable you to choose how you want to run your data warehouse. Whether you have a little data and a need for a lot of compute, vice versa, or anywhere in-between, we have you covered. No need to over allocate for your specific data and performance requirements.
The Australia Regions are available to customers with a business presence in Australia or New Zealand.
The India regions are currently available to volume licensing customers and partners with a local enrollment in India. For more information, contact your Microsoft India partner manager or account manager. The India regions will open to direct online Azure subscriptions in 2016.

Storage pricing below reflects General Availability pricing, which will go into effect on September 1, 2016. Storage will be charged at Standard Disk RA-GRS rates until September 1. Please see the storage pricing page for details.
Data storage is charged based on Azure Premium Storage rates of $122.88/1TB/month ($0.16515072/1TB/hour). Data storage includes the size of your data warehouse and 7-days of incremental snapshot storage.
Note: Storage transactions are not billed. You only pay for stored data and not storage transactions.
Optionally, you can choose to have your data warehouse copied to geo-redundant storage for disaster recovery. Storage for geo-redundant copies is billed at Standard Disk RA-GRSs of $0.12/GB/month.
Yes, once the data warehouse is created, you will be billed hourly for: 1) compute ($520.8/100 DWUs/month), unless the data warehouse is paused, and 2) 1TB of storage ($122.88/1TB/month).
Pausing the data warehouse pauses compute. If your data warehouse was paused for the entire hour, you will not be charged compute during that hour. If your data warehouse was active and then changed to pause during the hour, then you will be charged for that hour of compute. When your data warehouse is paused, you will only be charged for storage which can bring dramatic cost savings to your bill.
Compute and storage are billed separately to make it easier for you to see the level of compute resources consumed. Compute usage is charged on an hour basis. For example, if your data warehouse is active for 12-hours in a month, you will only be billed for the 12-hours that your data warehouse existed. If your data warehouse exists for only 30 minutes in a month, you will be billed for 1 hour.
Your data storage charge is inclusive of the size of your primary database, plus 7 days of incremental snapshots. Charges are rounded to the nearest TB. For example, if your data warehouse is 1.5 TB and you have 100 GB of snapshots, you will be billed for 2 TB of data at a rate of $122.88/1TB/month.
Storage is sold in 1TB allocations. If you grow beyond 1TB of storage, your storage account will automatically grow to 2TBs.
You cannot opt out of snapshots as this capability provides your data warehouse with data loss and corruption protection.
You will receive a separate storage charge for geo-redundant disaster recovery (geo DR), which will be billed at $0.12/GB/month. For example, if you choose geo DR for a 1.5 TB database, you will be billed for 1.5 TB of geo-DR at a rate of $0.12/GB/month.
