First Site is one of Melbourne's most innovative galleries for emerging artists, designers and creative practitioners. Showcasing a diverse array of work from students across a range of disciplines, First Site Gallery has new exhibitions opening every two weeks throughout the year.
Floor talks: All artists give floor talks about their work. These take place the last Friday of the show at 1pm in the gallery.

#Occupy Mandatory Detention: Azlan McLennan
G1 | Pro-refugee artist and activist Azlan McLennan presents #Occupy Mandatory Detention. This exhibition is a protest against the government’s inhumane policies towards asylum seekers, in particular the 20 years since the implementation of mandatory detention. #OMD draws on the inspiration of the global Occupy movement against the dictates of the 1% and the inspiring courage and resistance shown by refugees incarcerated in Australia’s concentration camps. Curated by the RMIT Refugee Action Collective.

Schwindelig: Nele Hoffmann
G2 | Nele Hoffmann explores popular culture through her work. The work deals specifically with ideas of the every day and what it is to be human, centering around emotions and empathy.

Solvent Libel: M T Walker
G3 | This exhibition offers a fascinating and visually stunning interpretation of modernist Australian political philosophies. The photographic and 3-channel video works use imagery of Housing Commission flats and the ominous footage of tunnels beneath St. Kilda’s Palais Theatre, with 1930s Australian political speeches. The works juxtapose somewhat antiquated political ideologies against the role of the contemporary state, within an artistic perspective.

Urbanhabits: Bin Dixon-Ward:
G1 | Bin Dixon-Ward is intrigued by the complexity of urban forms. Her works duplicate the layers of spaces, forms and shapes of the city, combining these elements to create intriguing structures for wearing.

Wondernamel 2012
G2 | Wondernamel began in 2007 and continues as a group exhibition of contemporary enamelling in Australia. The artists exhibiting in Wondernamel 2012, work in diverse ways making original work in the area of enamelling. Wondernamel is an invented word connecting the use of enamel by the artists using the notion of the curiosity cabinet or wonder room. Curated by Dr Kirsten Haydon, Object based Practice, Gold and Silversmithing, RMIT University.

Doko he Iku (Where is it going): Naoko Inuzuka
G3 | Clouds travel and float like the internal emotive state of ‘in-between’. The artist’s personal journey of migration to Australia is the starting point from which the idea for these objects grew. Naoko Inuzuka was the winner of the 2011 Maggie Fairweather Undergraduate Gold & Silversmithing Residency Award. This exhibition consists of a body of work made during the residency.

Not just meat joy: Katie Parrish
G1 | This exhibition is a form of research into the eternal question of humanity, and the search for meaning within meaninglessness. We drown in an overflowing population engorged with material privilege, and yet feel we are alone, with nothing. We go through learnt motions to quench this unrelenting torture of not knowing. We fuck, we love, we hate. This exhibition is about the flailing nature of existence.

"Argh!": Alexander Johnson
G2 | “Argh!” is a reflection on the extremities of human emotion, anxiety and social morality in an exceedingly cruel world. Meet a host of hand-sculpted characters whose both strange and comic appearance depicts a childlike world of robots, monsters, villains and victims. Where the lines dividing the imagined and the real are blurred, and not everything is as it seems.

Drawing a Language: Joshua Hook & James Little
G3 | 'Drawing a language' is an investigatory process series of drawings by artists James Little and Josh Hook. The series aims to look into their own and each others artistic languages and practices and to come away with an understanding of how these languages manifest themselves and what it means to have a language as an artist.

Shared Spaces: Jacqueline Ball, Elina Gault, Steph Wilson, Trudy Moore, Melanie Jayne Taylor
G1 | Shared Spaces is a culmination of five artists working in distinct mediums using methods of execution that are new to their practice. In addition to an apparent aesthetic connection, the exhibition investigates tension and absence. Painted representations of interior space, photographic and video recordings of architecture, three dimensional paper rubbings, projected imagery of imagined spaces and mixed media installation will be presented.

Past/Present/Future: Gabriel Nilsen
G2 | Past/Present/Future looks at different aspects of time. At any moment if you think about time we are not in the future and not yet in the past, we are of the moment. This work attempts to capture a moment of time to then take the viewer somewhere else in their thinking/experiencing of time.

Spiritual Transformation: Mojgan Habibi
G1 | My work explores the notions of movement and change. The spiritual message of my work is universal and speaks about transformation and hope. I wish to express these qualities through my work which explores the spiral whirling movement in a three dimensional work. This expression of movement is enhanced by showing the work as a group of ceramic pieces to create a meditation based on the illusion of movement and stillness at the same time.

Limbs: Ashlley Morgan-Shae
G2 | A life-support system of limbs- human and tree, show the collusion in relationships of aggressor/victim, sexual differences, hurt and healing and finding a way through. Inspired by abuse and night-shadows – terror is negotiated to find harmony, balance and flow.

HEART OF STONE: Katie Jayne Britchford
G3 | Heart Of Stone is an exhibition of contemporary artifact. It is a collection of geological specimens that represent an iconic and widely recognized symbol, the love heart. Through the process of stone carving, each heart is imbued with a new purpose and meaning creating an experience for the wearer. Heart of stone is a vast collection of brooches made to be worn close to one’s heart.

The Murray River Project: Daniel Boetker-Smith
G2 | Daniel Boetker-Smith’s documentary photography project Anastomosis tackles the divisivesubject of the Murray River and its past, present and future. His works real subject however is the nature of storytelling, and the way narratives, like the River, sometimes flow, sometimes dry up,and sometimes hit a snag. In this series of colour photographs the Murray’s digressive qualities create a framework for a telling 21st century story of an ancient River.

Scratch the Surface and See: Cassandra Littlehands Smith
G3 | Scratch the Surface and See. ‘Stigmergy’ is the phenomenon where one’s individual action becomes absorbed into a narrative which manifests as a form of communal mark-making. The only thing it requires is a catalyst.

G1 + G2 + G3 | Nine sound artists descend on First Site Gallery’s every nook, cranny and corridor to create a sonic labyrinth that is rich and immersive. Zawa Zawa presents work spanning a range of diverse practices, all with sound as the central medium. The site will be activated by multichannel speaker systems, sculpture, video, interactive and web-based art.

Honours Graduation Exhibition
G1 + G2 + G3 | The Honours (Fine Art) exhibition brings together works by graduating students that negotiate and explore the diversity of contemporary practice through investigations and enquiries within the fields of ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, photography, sound and video. This exhibition presents works that explore the various roles of art media through new strategies formed within contemporary art.

G1 + G2 + G3 | Bedell NonfictionNow is one of the most significant international gatherings of nonfiction writers, filmmakers, poets, scholars and artists from around the world. As part of this event hosted by RMIT, two exhibitions at First Site will expand and deepen ideas of what nonfiction, literature and visual art is, and could be. The Swap Shop Laboratory and Non will explore notions of truth and authenticity, the word as image, the body and the real.
