- High-speed Internet stumps government
Congress just received a report it requested on this hot, newfangled thing, the Internet. At least, it was a newfangled thing back when the report was requested--in 1998. Officials say the National Research Council was asked, seven years ago, to finish the report within nine months, but by golly, the whole Internet thing was just changing too fast to catch up with. The $1 million, taxpayer-funded report's findings? Everything is, basically, fine. Wow, thanks, guys. - The littlest victims: French watchmakers
Sometimes the world is so selfish and blind. We just embrace our new technologies and don't even think about the unintended victims of our march toward progress. Take watchmakers. The youth of today don't even bother with watches! They just check the time on their cell phones! It's gotten so bad, in fact, that French watchmakers and jewellers were forced to sue a phone carrier for advertising the obsolescence of watches and clocks. Now that is just sad--in that "you've got to be kidding me" way. - Problem: obesity. Answer: video games?
Does your child have a problem with excess pounds? Try working it off the video game way, with Dance Dance Revolution! A West Virginia public employees' insurance group is conducting a study with 85 obese kids, to see whether dancing along to the goofy Japanese video game will boost their activity and help them drop the poundage. One 175-pound 11-year-old has dropped 10 pounds so far...and he looked so cool doing it. - Send us buzz
