Introducing rich, interactive UI elements without affecting app performance is one of mobile development's trickiest balancing acts.  Standard Android RecyclerViews are fantastic for view recycling and memory efficiency. But handling multi-touch pinch-to-zoom, double-tap, and panning without triggering expensive re-layout passes has always been a subtle engineering challenge. To solve this for our complex UI layouts, the mobile team at PhonePe engineered ZoomableRecyclerView. Instead of modifying structural layout hierarchies, it handles transformations directly at the visual drawing layer. By adjusting how the screen is rendered on the fly: • Recycling stays 100% intact: No breaking native layout mechanics. • Zero UI jumpiness: Multi-finger gestures transition seamlessly.  • Native-grade performance: Panning and swipe momentum run directly on Android’s graphics engine. Best of all, we have open-sourced it with zero external dependencies so the broader Android developer community can use it in their own apps.
