Map Images

[edit]

Is it acceptable to upload a digitized version of the Automobile Club of Southern California's "Indian Country" map from the early 1950s? Zzwerzy (talk) 22:48, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Zzwerzy: I assume the map would have been copyrighted, and indicates the year of copyright. Was copyright renewed? See https://exhibits.stanford.edu/copyrightrenewals for how to determine this (at least I hope so, I've used that page in the past, but right now I don't seem to be able to access it from Germany); someone else might have a better resource, but I see it has been several days and no one has come forth with one. - Jmabel ! talk 22:51, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello everybody.

[edit]

So. I recently uploaded the file but @Wikipedian-in-Waiting warned me that this is forbidden because of BLP rules. And I agree with this. But I have another, and very important for me, question: what are the rules for uploading akin images as files in the userbox? Mine is about Epstein files (sure). So?

SunnyIvannie (talk) 14:36, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedian-in-Waiting has only a handful of edits here and not many more on Wikipedia. They are not particularly experienced, and their comments are misleading here.
There are two separate projects; they have different rules. en:WP:BLPPRIMARY simply doesn't exist here. It's certainly not a reason to not upload it, although it does imply limitations to how it's used on English Wikipedia. Even then it doesn't prevent it (although it may require some en:WP:SECONDARY in addition to support it).
I would though want to see a better source cited for this, such as a web link. It's obviously contentious, and we have to be able to demonstrate that it's an accurate repreoduction. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:30, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's fair; I originally assumed they meant to use it in a wikipedia article because of past actions, but they say they want to use it in "the userbox". Perhaps advise them how they can use that image for their userbox.
They pinged me because they've had some images removed in wikimedia due to public domain issues; there have been various issues across three platforms now, so perhaps you could additionally become their point-person? Wikipedian-in-Waiting (talk) 16:54, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Please disregard the request that you become their point-person—I see your wikipedia account was perma-banned so you are probably not able to do so. However, you could still tell them how you suggest they go about adding the image from the Epstein files to their userbox, please. Here's the guidance for the English wikipedia, which I believe they no longer edit but is surely similar to the Ukranian one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Userboxes#Userbox_content
Thanks again for your help. Wikipedian-in-Waiting (talk) 17:13, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Andy Dingley, @Wikipedian-in-Waiting. Guys, I really grateful to you all but I a little bit didn't understand what I should do. I'm really new in Ukrainian Wikipedia as well in English Wikipedia and Wikisource is something pretty new for me. And another question: is these rules different in different Wikipedias? Thanks!
SunnyIvannie (talk) 18:09, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@SunnyIvannie: I can answer your last question: the rules are different in different Wikipedias, you can see links to the rules about biographies of living people at the bottom of policy on material about living persons on a Wikimedia content project (Q4663389). Sometimes the Wikimedia Foundation will set some rules for all projects, e.g. foundation:Resolution:Biographies of living people. As a very new editor choosing an image for a userbox, I suggest you choose cautiously. File:The First Fifty Years.jpg looks safe. TSventon (talk) 15:45, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@TSventon, thanks! I'll ask in Ukrainian Wikipedia also. Anyway, I'm really grateful for your advices, thank you.

I use Cat a lot for many cats but I uploaded a file of albums from Flikr and I did "Category:Category CoCo Key" and not "Category: CoCo Key." Example File:CoCo Key Weekend (4979858637).jpg. Wobs100 (talk) 12:07, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

About AI Usage

[edit]

Hello and welcome dear fellow vikipedia community,

I kindly ask to learn about how we are using ai on vikipedia? Is it possible to use AI for making an old picture higher quality with %100 original but only resolution fixes?

Thanks. Bayatbeyi (talk) 16:40, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Bayatbeyi. See Commons:Upscaling for more information. In addition, some Wikipedia projects (such as en:WP:AIUPSCALE) do not allow such modified images to be used in articles.
On a file like your File:Ahmet İhsan Pehlivanlı TBMM.jpg you should be aware that the AI hasn't made "only resolution fixes", it has completely invented the textures of the subject's hat and clothing, the pores of his skin, the hairs of his moustache, the shoulder which isn't visible in the original image, etc. Belbury (talk) 17:02, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for explanation. I will carefully check image if i want to upscale again. And i will check commons. Bayatbeyi (talk) 12:08, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Scratch photos

[edit]

Hello, I would like to upload this image to Commons. Because this image was uploaded in 2010, which is before January 22, 2026, can the image be uploaded to Commons? TechVindicator (talk) 11:42, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I have no idea what you have in mind with "2010" and "January 22, 2026," but the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license that is offered is, in fact, the most common license for Commons. Just make sure you attribute it properly and indicate that as the license. - Jmabel ! talk 07:13, 24 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Apologies for not explaining. {{Cc-by-sa-2.0-Scratch}} says that images of Scratch published before January 22, 2026 can be uploaded to Commons, but images uploaded after January 22, 2026 cannot be uploaded. So, can this image be uploaded or not? TechVindicator (talk) 07:20, 24 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@TechVindicator: Yes, but the license would presumably be the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license offered on the relevant page. - Jmabel ! talk 19:55, 24 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
On the ToU licence, it is Cc-by-sa-2.0. After January 22, 2026, it uses a custom licence which explicitly says it is incompatible with Commons. So, my question was 'can I still upload Scratch photos?'TechVindicator (talk) 22:31, 24 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Logo refused?

Article link: nl:Landelijke Cliëntenraad

Hello, I want to upload the logo of the Landelijke Cliëntenraad, to go with the page. I work there, so it should not be a problem. However, I am not allowed to upload it because I don't have the rights? How then can I ever get the logo on the page?

Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers, BFAM22 BFAM22 (talk) 12:15, 24 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@BFAM22: I work there, so it should not be a problem makes no sense. Plenty of people work for organizations and do not have authority to license the organization's intellectual property. Are we talking about the logo at the top of https://www.landelijkeclientenraad.nl/ or something else?
It looks to me like that logo might be over the threshold of originality for the Netherlands (see, specifically, Commons:Threshold of originality/Europe#Netherlands), and neither Commons nor the Dutch-language Wikipedia have any provision for non-free logos. If that's the logo you are talking about, and if the organization is not explicitly offering a free license for the logo, then I would hesitate to upload it, but I'd suggest asking at COM:Village pump/Copyright, where there is likely to be more expertise as to just where that threshold lies for the Netherlands. When you ask there, please indicate the particular logo as I did above, or be clear if it is something else than whatever you have in mind; you might also want to link this reply. - Jmabel ! talk 20:09, 24 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

About a missing or forgotten image

[edit]

I am college student doing a project about zionism. I remember seeing an image of historical document on a wikipedia page, which is a conference record or a post-conference declaration or something similar, about a zionist organization to accept part of the terms of a solution suggested by another organization.

After asking gemini, me and my groupmates believe it is likely to be "Resolutions of the 22nd Zionist Congress", but we still failed to find this image on wikipedia or internet.

Does anyone remember this image, or can an administrator check the deletion logs for files related to the "22nd Zionist Congress" or similar post-ww2 Zionist declarations? Any help finding the file name, the original Wikipedia page, or a copy of the document on the internet would be greatly appreciated for our project! Thank you. US Federal photographs and PD

[edit]

My understanding is that photographs and works produced for the US Federal government are automatically put into the Public Domain, based on Section 105 of the Copyright Act of 1976. I recently came across this photograph on Flickr [1] by the US Pacific Fleet. The US Pacific Fleet is part of the US Navy (and thus part of the US federal government). However, the Flickr image itself states it is licensed by CC BY-NC 2.0. Can this license be disregarded since it is automatically public domain by law? Spy-cicle (talk) 13:19, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Spy-cicle: The VIRIN "140304-N-WZ747-079" that is shown on Flickr clearly documents that a US Navy member took the image (going by the documentation in https://api.army.mil/e2/c/downloads/2024/09/05/47c79e62/virin-information.pdf , the N is reserved for the Navy). So, yes, by law, that would be public domain. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 17:07, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Okay, great thank you very much for the detailed explanation. Spy-cicle (talk) 17:36, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Evidence photographed by West Midlands Police and forwarded to FBI

[edit]

Hi, I'm looking at a sketch made by Omar al-Bayoumi (available at https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bayoumi-september-11-evidence-60-minutes/ and elsewhere). It was photographed by the West Midlands Police at Bayoumi's Birmingham home in September 2001, forwarded to the FBI, and later included in the proceedings of Ashton et al. v. KSA in SDNY. NYT credits the image to the SDNY. As far as I can tell, it initially was published online by CBS (60 Minutes investigation). What, if any, is the public domain situation here? Theodore Christopher (talk) 19:47, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't see anything there to suggest that Omar al-Bayoumi ever alienated his copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 08:49, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Chunked upload stuck as 4MB corrupt stub due to server memory limit

[edit]

I have successfully uploaded a 3 GB PDF file of "Mahabharatam - Panchanan Tarkaratna" using the chunked upload protocol (781 chunks in total). However, during the final server-side assembly phase, the process timed out with a stashfailed internal server error due to memory/processing limits.

As a workaround, the first chunk was released, and the file is currently published on Commons as a 4 MB corrupt stub showing 0×0 dimensions.

Since all 781 chunks were successfully uploaded and are fully stashed on the server, could an administrator or a member of the technical team please run the backend tools to append/re-assemble the remaining chunks and fix the file dimensions?

  • *Target File:* File:Mahabharatam Panchanan Tarkaratna.pdf

Info on ban in wikis

[edit]

Hello, I like to know whether if a user is banned in Commons (I mean, not a global ban), the corresponding user is banned in Wikipedia too? --~2026-51965-05 (talk) 10:52, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Commons doesn't really have anything we call a "ban" (other than a global ban), just a "block". Being blocked on one WMF wiki does not automatically block you on another, and in any event there are several hundred Wikipedias in different languages. However, once someone is blocked on several wikis, a global lock becomes extremely likely. Jmabel ! talk 16:32, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is it okay to upload this pic?

[edit]

I've been thinking of uploading a screenshot of the first page of this document as I understand the rules of Commons I could since it's only text, but there's one pesky problem, that tiny little logo of the Catholic Truth Society, I've read the De minimis policy but I still have doubts about it.

I've tried some screenshots and for what it's worth that tiny logo doesn't tend to survive zooming, I don't know if that would make it acceptable or not... Another options I've thought of are the very obvious censorship or editing out the logo, but again, I still consider myself a newcomer that doesn't fully understand all the rules in here so I thought asking for help was the best thing I could do was asking before either giving up or making a mistake.

Thanks in advance. Xabier Loudrich (talk) 17:52, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Xabier Loudrich: Catholic Truth Society was founded in the 19th Century. Any idea how old the logo is? In any case, I think there would have to be a fair amount of originality (which I don't see here) to have a copyright on a representation of the Crossed Keys. - Jmabel ! talk 18:53, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It seems they've changed logos multiple, but I don't seem to be able to find them as holding any trade mark in the Intellectual Property Office of the UK, but I've only done surface searches.
At any rate that's a good alley of investigation right there. Xabier Loudrich (talk) 19:19, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Theater bars

We don't seem to have any category related at all to bar spaces in theaters; came up for me because of File:Uferstudios - walking through Studio 12 to Studio 14.jpg (which barely even shows that is what it is), but surely we must have a fair number of such images. I searched for theatre bar and opened likely looking images. Category:Theatre bars appears not to exist, so you may have to invent it. TSventon (talk) 00:45, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jeff G.: related, but clearly different. For starters, these are bars, and some of them operate as bars even when the theater isn't open. Also: the "concession" in "concession stand" at least originally meant that it is operated by someone other than the operator of the larger facility, though I think that has loosened up a lot over the last 50-75 years. (I'm just old enough that it definitely still usually meant that when I was growing up, but I've noticed that has been largely lost.)
I'll start a new category here & see if I can find more than my own couple of pictures to populate it. - Jmabel ! talk 10:44, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Regarding "Duplicate" Images

[edit]

Hi, good morning/afternoon/evening! I left some sort of notice on the "original" file's talk page for the exact details, however I was wondering how to handle images that seem to be duplicates/reuploads but aren't by the same source and has varying cross-wiki use? - AgentPhoenix08 (talk) 14:38, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

While these are three images of the same work, they are not duplicates. They are differently cropped, and they make different decisions about color. They are all correctly in Category:View of Tenochtitlan in La Gran Tenochtitlan (Diego Rivera) along with other images of this work. - Jmabel ! talk 15:26, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Alright, thanks for the advice. - AgentPhoenix08 (talk) 15:47, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
AgentPhoenix08 this is normal for photographs of paintings or murals. Cameras differ, the lighting will differ and the condition of the painting may change if it is cleaned or restored. TSventon (talk) 18:22, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Category order

[edit]

Are there any rules or guidelines about in what order categories should be placed on file page? For some time now, another user has been re-arranging categories on my photos in alphabetical order. (example) This often results in the first category that people see, being some rather secondary and not very important category, while the ones for the main subject get buried at the end of the list. Shouldn't the most relevant category be the first and easiest to find in the list? Hidden categories don't count since they are always displayed at the end of the list, regardless of where in the order you write them. Cart (talk) 20:10, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • No. Definitely no rules (we tend to avoid 'rules' here unless we must).
Good practice is another matter, although there we've so far (AFAIK) failed to have anyone write up much about this. Speaking as one of the local categorization obsessives, that's on me too.
For your example, my views would be varied on them. No one version is clearly 'better', let alone right.
Some axioms (subjective):
  • It matters. This is an issue worth paying attention to.
  • Alphabetic sorting is pointless. It adds nothing useful.
  • The sorting of category presentation should be optimised for the use of the reader. So Floating docks in Sweden is important and (I presume, I don't know the area) Slävik & Åbyfjorden are highly relevant too.
  • Technical metadata, e.g. camera used, can be pushed right down.
Andy Dingley (talk) 20:40, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, your reasoning is in line with my own. But I wanted to ask here anyway, since there is always a risk I've missed something, even after all the years I've spent here. I had a look around for some guidelines, but couldn't find anything. Might be a good idea, as you say, to put down something in writing. --Cart (talk) 20:53, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

How would being in a news article make something public domain? I have to guess you do not understand the meaning of this legal term. Please read en:Public domain or its equivalent in whatever language is most convenient for you.
You don't say in what language Wikipedia you want to use this. Each has its own policy about non-free images, and that would be an issue you'd have to work out in the particular language Wikipedia, not here on Commons. If you can say what language, I can aim you at information about their policy. - Jmabel ! talk 21:20, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Help in transferring to Commons

[edit]

I would like to ask for help in transferring https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Jane_Veloso_Presidential_pardon.jpg to Commons. The original uploader uploaded it as a "fair use" photo, without knowing that works made by employees of the Philippine government are in the public domain, though signatures of living persons may be redacted with respect to Data Privacy Act of 2012. I'm hoping for your kind consideration. Thanks! Ishagaturo (talk) 13:32, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Arnaud Feist

[edit]

Dear,

I'm the head of Communication at Brussels Airport Company. I see that the picture and information about the CEO of Brussels Airport is no longer up to date. I was wondering, how we can update the page. Marleen Airport (talk) 11:47, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Marleen Airport: What page (please link)? Commons does not have a page Arnaud Feist, Brussels Airport, or Brussels Airport Company. Are you talking about something on one of the Wikipedias in some language? Commons is just a media repository. And I don't know whether you are saying that the wrong CEO is listed somewhere, or that some information about the CEO is wrong. - Jmabel ! talk 18:16, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Marleen Airport, you are at the wrong help desk. This is where we keep all the images for Wikipedias in different languages. We do have a category with images of Arnaud Feist (Category:Arnaud Feist) but that is all. You need to ask at the help desk of the Wikipedia where the inaccurate information is. For the French, see: this link and for the Dutch, see this link. Or, you can explain your concerns at the talk page connected to the faulty article. French: this link and Dutch this link. Also, since you are part of the company that the articles are about, you can't update the articles; this needs to be done by an independent editor. They can help you if you post on the article's talk page. Each language has its own version of Wikipedia, there is no "central" one from where the others are translated. Brussels Airport has articles on Wikipedias in 60 languages, and if you have issues with all of these, you need to go to the help desk, or talk page, of each and every one of them. It is a common misconception that there is only one Wikipedia. Hope this helps. --Cart (talk) 19:17, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

RE: Nominate for Deletion

[edit]

Hello,

I would like to request a review of the Wikimedia Commons file “Frottage de pénis avec éjaculation.webm”:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frottage_de_p%C3%A9nis_avec_%C3%A9jaculation.webm

I believe this file should be considered for deletion under Wikimedia Commons' project-scope requirements because it is a graphic recording of an explicit sexual act, including ejaculation, and I question whether the actual video provides sufficient educational value to justify its inclusion on Commons.

The subject can be explained through written text, diagrams, or non-explicit educational illustrations. I therefore question whether showing an actual explicit sexual encounter provides educational information that cannot reasonably be conveyed through substantially less explicit media.

I understand that Commons does permit some sexual material where there is a legitimate educational, scientific, historical, artistic, or documentary purpose. My concern is specifically whether this particular explicit video meets the requirement that media be realistically useful for an educational purpose.

I do not have a Wikimedia Commons account and do not wish to create one. I therefore cannot find or use the “Nominate for deletion” function. Could someone please explain how I can properly request a deletion review without creating an account, or otherwise assist in submitting this file for community review?

Thank you. ~2026-52368-78 (talk) 06:11, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@~2026-52368-78: You can follow the directions at Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually. However, if your deletion rationale is simply that "it is a graphic recording of an explicit sexual act", I can more or less guarantee that your deletion request will fail. Please read Commons:What_Commons_is_not#Commons_is_not_censored (and possibly follow the links there) before proceeding. - Jmabel ! talk 08:26, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Restoring large Wikipedia files and exporting to Commons

[edit]
Resolved

A decade ago, I uploaded several scans of 1930s dust jackets to Wikipedia. Because my understanding at the time was that they were under copyright (which was the case for the underlying books), the sizes were promptly reduced; the higher-resolution originals were hidden; and the files were not exported to Commons.

Per this 2023 discussion, however, it is apparent that the dust jackets in question—which did not include separate copyright notices—are now in the public domain. They can thus be tagged with {{PD-US-dust-jacket}}, which was created due to the discussion.

Thus, I would like to (a) restore the high-resolution originals, and (b) export them to Commons. Can anyone help? If I'm looking at this correctly, an admin will be needed for the first part, but I can do the second myself.

The files are: BG Freshman; BG Sophomore; BG Junior; BG Senior; BG World's Fair (ALB); and BG World's Fair (BR).

Thanks, --Usernameunique (talk) 18:59, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Lisensing of cropped versions of a file

[edit]

G’day from Oz. I have downloaded a copy of File:The sole Larkin Lascoter VH-UKT photograhed by Matthew Nugent at Bourke aerodrome, New South Wales, n.d.jpg and edited it to create three cropped versions that remove the damaged areas and emphasise different sections of the original - one is cropped to include the camel but not the man; one to include the man but not the camel; and one that crops out both. I wish to upload them to Commons as separate files from the original but I am unsure about what information would be needed to be copied from the original and what copyright tags to apply. Cheers YSSYguy (talk) 06:58, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@YSSYguy: The most important thing is to add {{Images extracted}} (with appropriate parameters}} to the original and {{Extracted from}} to the new uploads. (If you did more than crop, then {{Derivative works}} and {{Derived from}} would be more appropriate.)
Since this work is in the public domain, it is not terribly important what you do more than that. You should certainly still credit the original photographer and give an accurate date.
It doesn't sound like you've done anything copyrightable, so you'd use the same PD tag as the original. If you had done derivative work that would have its own copyright, the best way I've found to express the copyright situation is by using {{Copyright information}} with appropriate content; there may be something more specific to this situation, but I'm not aware of it. - Jmabel ! talk 09:38, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
