For drone manufacturers, cybersecurity doesn’t stop at the network or the firmware. A modern UAS is a cyber-physical system built on electronics sourced through complex, multi-tier supply chains. Supplier documentation, approved vendor lists and traceability matter, but they don’t independently answer a fundamental question: Are the electronics you received actually the electronics you approved? NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 brings supply chain risk directly into the cybersecurity conversation, including component authenticity, provenance, tamper detection and system integrity. For drone manufacturers, that creates an opportunity to bring physical verification into the security model, from incoming PCBAs and flight-control electronics through production, integration and sustainment. The chip and memory crunch are creating a new supply-chain risk: harvested GPUs and memory chips are making their way back into circulation. Malicious actors are stripping high-value memory and GPU components from modern graphics cards and reintroducing those parts into the electronics supply chain. A GPU card arriving with its chips missing is obviously compromised. The bigger concern is what happens next: where do those harvested components end up? As local AI becomes increasingly common in mission-critical systems, recycled, counterfeit, or tampered components can create significant reliability, provenance, and cybersecurity risks. This is another reminder that trusting the box, the label, or even the immediate supplier is no longer enough. We need ways to verify the electronics themselves.
