Here's the #ICANN86 recap from sunny Seville: The Transfer Policy Review Recommendations have officially been adopted by the ICANN Board. That means the IRT can get to work translating them into updated Consensus Policy, leading to a more secure and straightforward transfer process, plus the removal of the Change of Registrant process. We're pleased to contribute both at the conference and in our day-to-day work intersessionally. Reseller partners: we welcome your input on these or any other DNS governance topics. The ICANN CP Summit in Manchester covered a lot of ground, including AI agent standards, DNS Abuse mitigation, and Registration Data Policy enforcement. Among the highlights, Tucows' own Head of Policy and Privacy, Sarah W., led a session on Data Protection Impact Assessment, inspired by the DNS Abuse Policy Development Process currently underway. An idea has been floating around the #ICANN space to shorten the window registrants have to verify their domains. The motivation? Reduce DNS Abuse. The problem? It doesn’t hold up. According to our numbers, this change would catch just 2% of #DNS Abuse, while significantly disrupting the thousands of legitimate registrants who depend on that window. Curious why this idea misses the mark? We break it down in our latest blog: https://hubs.ly/Q04hWrlP0

Domains are foundational to every client's online presence, but for boutique studios, managing domains across various third-party registrars often means dealing with access issues, administrative friction, and project delays. This was a recurring challenge for Paul Massell, co-founder of the Oklahoma-based web studio New Eve. Sending clients to external registrars created a disconnected experience, especially for nonprofits, where ownership tracking can quickly become complicated. By bringing domain management in-house through OpenSRS Storefront, New Eve eliminated the registrar runaround. “If anyone asks me [to manage domains], I’m never going to say no again… it’s just very clean instead of [a] messy situation.” It allowed them to maintain full visibility under their own brand, keeping the focus entirely on supporting their clients. Here is how they streamlined their workflow: https://hubs.ly/Q04hyx690

Managing domain renewals for 50 clients meant monitoring dates, chasing payments, issuing invoices, and hoping nothing slipped through the cracks. For Penny Elbery, founder of fortunegreen, a boutique web design agency in Perth Hills, Australia, that overhead added up fast. When OpenSRS Storefront added support for .au domains, she moved everyone over immediately. Now, clients receive renewal notifications directly, can enable auto-renew, and complete payments themselves through Stripe. Penny stays in control without being in the middle of every transaction. "It just automates my business and takes a lot of pressure off me." Domains went from a source of admin pressure to what Penny calls "a really quite easy income stream" — one she's now planning to promote more actively to new clients. High-performing agencies run a 2:1 project-to-retainer ratio. And retainers don't slow project work down — they make it stick. The agencies with the strongest client LTV aren't always winning more deals. They're building the right mix. How you blend projects and recurring services shapes how long clients stay, how often they expand, and how predictable your revenue becomes. Here's what the data shows: https://hubs.li/Q04gwvrN0 #DigitalAgencies #LTV #Retainers

"I can't tell you how many people lose their domain information, and it expires, and the site goes down…" Kenneth Feldman has seen it happen too many times. As a freelance web developer with 175+ client sites under his belt, domain chaos — lost credentials, expired registrations, defunct contact emails — was a recurring headache he couldn't ignore. So he brought domain management in-house with OpenSRS. Now he runs a two-path setup: if clients want full control, he points them to his branded domains Storefront. If they'd rather he take care of everything, he manages it all through the Reseller Control Panel. Either way, Kenneth has the admin access he needs and his clients stay the official registrant.
