Nick Vanderhoven shared thisRecap of my Shenzhen SEO week in China 🇨🇳 Shout out to everyone who joined my talk on Expired Domains for SEO / GEO, and to JP Zhang for the intro. We had so many questions we had to cut it off for the next talks. The conference was great: - talking SEO in driverless taxis - perfect mix of Chinese and Western attendees - tier-1 speakers sharing actual insights, not slides - lightning talks that actually sparked conversations With GEO and AI taking over, there’s something new to learn every week. First time I’ve seen this many Belgians at the conference and they were all doing their thing Tanya Van Gastel, Milan Smets, Katrien Ackx I was lucky to catch a lot of the side events too: speakers dinner, city tours, after parties. Even the Great Firewall couldn’t kill the vibe. Came home with a long todo list of features for UpSnatch. Rolling those out in the next weeks. Thanks everyone who made this week so good! Nick Vanderhoven reposted thisNick Vanderhoven reposted this“Scaling a lot of content with AI is very risky.” A key point from Lily Ray at Shenzhen SEO Conference. Mass-producing listicles, 'best xyz'-articles, endless comparison pages, paid mentions,... are not a good long term strategy. Short-term GEO wins can easily create long-term SEO damage.

Nick Vanderhoven posted thisAfter years of going the extra mile as a consultant, I couldn't help but think: what if I focus 100% on my own product stack and clients? So I went all in. In February I left EverESSt. An incredible place where I worked with tons of extraordinary people building the next-gen payroll engine. I'd give everybody a shoutout but there are SO many of you. Really looking forward to seeing Filip Michiels, Reinout Van Bets and all the teams make it land. I loved working with the product team and architects. Combining product vision and enterprise architecture is what makes me thrive. In any serious startup those two go hand in hand. And with AI making a leap, a minimum viable product-market fit isn't going to cut it anymore. People expect continuous value from an ever-evolving product. Still, you can build the best software in the world, if people can't find your brand or product it's doomed. And brand visibility starts with a strong domain. After 25+ years in digital, including time at DPG Media, and hanging out with SEO experts worldwide, I had ALWAYS struggled with domain names. When I needed one, everything was already taken. And when I stopped searching like a madman, good ones slipped by for next to nothing. There are some solid tools out there, but they never really fit my flow. More often than not, I found myself searching deep into the night, left empty-handed. So I built my own platform to surface the domains I needed so badly. After all, I'm an expert in Big Data processing. How difficult can it be? Boy, has it been a ride. But the results were amazing, and people wanted a piece of the pie. That's why our team opened it up to the public on upsnatch.com We aggregate all domains and leverage AI to serve them up on a silver platter, whenever opportunities arise. No more late-night manual searches. Running an agency or hunting expired domains? Send me a DM, even just to say hi.

Nick Vanderhoven liked thisNick Vanderhoven liked thisWell, September was a bit of a whirlwind! Between speaking at Shenzhen SEO Conference, travelling, and running Impulse Riot Marketing, it's been a rather busy month. But I'm back, I've caught up with (most of) my emails, and I've opened up a few slots for new projects in October! For those who don't know me, I'm Sarah. I have 12+ years of experience in marketing, a background in psychology, and a slightly unhealthy obsession with understanding why people do what they do. I've worked with brands including Microsoft, Volvo, Airbnb and Helly Hansen, I've CMOd for a multimillion dollar company, and these days I run Impulse Riot with my other half, Richard Hanzlík. So, what am I offering? ☕ 60-minute marketing consultations — €120 Got a marketing problem you can't quite figure out? A website that gets traffic but doesn't convert? An SEO strategy that looks great on paper but isn't delivering? Bring me your questions, your data, or even just your frustrations. We'll spend an hour working through them together. No pushy sales, just an hour of practical advice based on psychology, marketing experience, and whatever challenges you're facing. 🔎 Consumer psychology & SEO audits I'll look beyond keywords and rankings to understand how your customers actually experience your website, where they encounter friction, and what might be stopping them from taking action. 🧠 Marketing strategies & fractional CMO support For businesses that need a clearer direction, whether that's entering a new market, improving their existing marketing, or figuring out where to invest their budget. 🌍 International SEO & market entry Helping businesses understand the people, languages, and cultural differences behind the markets they want to reach. I have a limited number of openings this month, so if you've been thinking about working together, now's a good time to get in touch. And if you don't need any marketing help yourself but know someone who does, I'd really appreciate you passing this along. My inbox is open! ❤️

Nick Vanderhoven liked thisNick Vanderhoven liked thisVery happy to announce Lars Jensen, Founder & CEO of ShortDot, as a featured speaker at Domain Summit Asia 2026 in Bangkok 🇹🇭 ShortDot has just taken a very big step. For the first time, the company has entered an ICANN new gTLD application round = submitting 40 applications covering 80 proposed strings. That gives us quite a few things to talk about in Bangkok :) Which new extensions make sense? What makes a new TLD commercially viable? How do you build registrar distribution? What have registry operators learned from the previous generation of new gTLDs? And perhaps most importantly — what does the next round mean for registrars, domain investors, brands and the wider domain industry? Lars has been building ShortDot since 2017, and today the company operates extensions including .icu, .bond, .cyou, .cfd and .sbs. ShortDot is also one of our partners for Domain Summit Asia, so I am particularly happy that Lars will be joining us again. There should be plenty to discuss. 📅 6–7 December 2026 📍 Holiday Inn Bangkok Sukhumvit by IHG 🇹🇭 Bangkok, Thailand Registration and event information: https://lnkd.in/eQVvBMch See you in Bangkok, Lars! #DomainSummitAsia #DomainSummit #ShortDot #Domains #DomainNames #NewgTLDs #ICANN #Registries #Bangkok

Nick Vanderhoven reacted on thisNick Vanderhoven reacted on thisWhat do DeepSeek, Doubao and Yuanbao actually cite when they answer a question? That was the question I brought to the Shenzhen SEO Conference 2026, and I'm grateful to JP Zhang and his team for giving it a stage in front of such a sharp international audience. The short version of what we found: yes, Chinese AI platforms lean heavily on their parent company's own content ecosystem. But that's only part of the picture, and the part that's missing is exactly where brands still have room to win. It was a privilege to share the APAC block with great neighbours: 川名麻央 & Polina Kogan on the unwritten rules of Japanese SEO, and Cristina S. S. & Jiyoung Lee on Korea, from Naver to AI. Different markets, same lesson: copy-pasting a Western playbook doesn't work. Talks I'm still thinking about: · Josh Blyskal on the new citation economy. Fascinating to compare how ChatGPT, AI Mode and Claude pick sources with what we see in China. · Konstantin S. on how strategic link building drives LLM visibility. Links aren't dead; they have a new job. · Wasin Mekkit on AI search that can't render JavaScript-heavy websites. A problem many China-facing sites have without knowing it. · Jonathan Kiekbusch on perception engineering: changing what AI says about your brand. · Nick Drewe on gaining and losing 80 million visitors. Honest and humbling. · Si Quan O. on automating 144 Ahrefs blog updates a year with AI. And congratulations to my partner Marcus Pentzek - 潘择科 on his VIP Day talk about how fragmented search in China really is. If anyone still thinks "China SEO = Baidu" or "China GEO = one chatbot," that talk was the cure. My takeaway: in China and everywhere else, AI search doesn't replace the fundamentals. It raises the bar for them. Thank you, Shenzhen. See you in 2027. #ShenzhenSEO #GEO #ChinaGEO #DeepSeek #Doubao #AISearch

Nick Vanderhoven reacted on thisNick Vanderhoven reacted on thisPersonal branding is incredibly important. When I first started going to conferences, I used to deliberately wear band T-shirts. Not because I particularly cared about fashion. Because every now and then someone would walk over and say: “Mate, is that a Sabaton T-shirt?” And suddenly I’d found my people. Conversation started. Awkward networking avoided. Then, of course, I accidentally became SEO Jesus. White suit. Sunglasses. Hair. Mildly blasphemous branding. It turned out to be an enormous marketing advantage. People who had never met me knew who I was. People would stop me at conferences. People remembered me months later. So naturally, having discovered the immense commercial value of a strong personal brand, I am now attempting to pivot again. I want to become the hotel slippers guy. For the last few conferences, I’ve started wearing the complimentary hotel slippers to the actual conference. Then I just… don’t change them. Conference → drinks → after-party → nightclub → questionable decisions → hotel at 4am. Shenzhen, China. Bulgaria. Lisbon. By the time I return to the hotel, my once-pristine five-star slippers look like they’ve completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Black. Flattened. Structurally compromised. Into the bin. Next morning: shower, fresh pair of hotel slippers, back to the conference. And I genuinely think I may have stumbled onto something. Conferences have always had this strange hierarchy of who can look like they give the least fucks. At one end, you’ve got the people in three-piece suits. Then the T-shirt people. Then someone turns up in a tracksuit. Then eventually you reach that billionaire aesthetic where the richer and more successful someone is, the more they dress like they’ve just been asked to leave a Wetherspoons. But I think hotel slippers might be the final boss. Because a tracksuit still implies: “I selected these clothes this morning.” Hotel slippers say: “I left my room and simply never reconsidered the decision.” And weirdly, it works. People comment on them. People laugh. People come over and start conversations. And I’ve made some genuinely great connections today because there’s something wonderfully disarming about discussing business with someone dressed reasonably normally from the ankles up, while their feet suggest they’re waiting for room service. Perhaps that’s the actual personal-branding lesson. Everyone is trying desperately to look important. Sometimes the strongest signal is looking like you couldn’t possibly care less. Anyway, I’m off to an after-party. The slippers are currently white. They will not be white tomorrow.

Nick Vanderhoven liked thisNick Vanderhoven liked thisWith GEO and LLM visibility, you’re not optimizing for a static system. Models change, sources change, and the way they retrieve and use information changes with them. That means the research behind GEO campaigns has to keep evolving too. Great point from Jabez Reuben at Shenzhen SEO Conference.
