About us
As the fastest-growing capital city, the cultural capital of the country, and one of the most liveable cities in the world, Melbourne is the most exciting place to do business. Invest Melbourne will help you to harness this prosperity, connect you with the right people at the right time, to achieve business success. Did you know? • Melbourne is a multicultural city with over 40% of our population born overseas and more than 100 languages and major dialects spoken. • Victoria contributes nearly a quarter of Australia's economic activity while only being 3% of our country's land mass. • Victoria has an over $580 billion economy and has achieved 2.59% average growth over the last 10 years. • Many of Australia's most prestigious universities are based in Melbourne and over 50% of Victorians have a post-secondary degree. • Victoria has a population of 6.98 million people, with 5.21 million in Melbourne. Five great reasons to invest in Melbourne 1. Strong, stable and diverse economy. Victoria represents only 3% of Australia’s total land mass, but accounts for nearly 22% of Australia’s Gross Domestic Product. 2. A city of knowledge with access to talent. Melbourne has a workforce of more than 3.01 million people and is home to half of the nation’s leading universities. 3. Competitive business costs. The cost of doing business in Melbourne is highly competitive to other eastern-seaboard cities, boosting business case feasibility. 4. Accessible location. Melbourne is a leading capital city within the GMT +10 time zone. This positions Melbourne at the heart of a time zone region (two hours either side of GMT +10), that spans across Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and large parts of Southeast Asia. 5. Quality of life. Melbourne ranks among the safest cities in the Asia-Pacific region and is one of the most liveable cities in the world.

Nick La couldn't get a job when he returned to Melbourne from Hong Kong. Too qualified, they said. Doesn't have local experience. So he built something to fix the system. WePloy is a recruitment platform that removes names, ages and genders from candidate profiles – stripping out the unconscious bias that was keeping talented people from even getting a look-in. The results were immediate. In our latest episode of Making It in Melbourne, Nick talks about building a startup from nothing, pitching to a potential investor over another passenger on a 9-hour flight, and what he's learned now that he’s on the other side of the table as a Venture Capitalist at Empress Capital. Spoiler: it's the person and the problem, not the pitch deck. 🎧 Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or watch on YouTube — search 'Making It in Melbourne'. Celebrating Mejuri’s arrival in Melbourne ✨ It’s been fantastic to welcome Mejuri to Melbourne, marking the brand’s very first store in Victoria. Located at Melbourne Emporium, the new store brings Mejuri’s distinctive approach to fine jewellery to the heart of our city. In just two months, Mejuri has already made a strong impression on Melbourne’s retail landscape. It’s easy to see why. Recently featured in Forbes https://lnkd.in/g-Yj9tR2 the brand has evolved from an e-commerce business into a globally recognised leader, reshaping how customers experience and engage with fine jewellery. With a mission to make fine jewellery accessible for everyday wear, Mejuri has challenged traditional industry norms by encouraging women to buy jewellery for themselves. This customer-focused approach has fuelled the company’s growth to more than 60 stores worldwide. We’re proud to have supported Mejuri’s Melbourne journey through the City of Melbourne’s Business Concierge service, helping the team navigate their expansion and bring their vision to life in our city. 🤔 Why are so few women founders receiving startup investment? The City of Melbourne is proud to support Equity Clear’s Show Us the Data initiative, which has released a compelling new national report examining the barriers women entrepreneurs face when seeking investment. The report highlights the need for a voluntary national reporting standard that would provide greater transparency across the funding journey, helping investors identify where women founders are disproportionately excluded and enabling evidence-based action to address these gaps. Better data leads to better decisions—and ultimately a more inclusive and innovative startup ecosystem. 📊 Read the report and explore the findings here: https://lnkd.in/gfYDAEHd Equity Clear Nick Reece Roshena Campbell Alison Leighton Sara Quon Mark Cochrane-Holley Andrew Stephenson Maureen Pillon Samar Mcheileh Noga Edelstein City of Melbourne
